Beyond the Glass Ceiling 2010

March 4, 2010, marked the Beyond the Glass Ceiling program’s kick-off celebration of National Women’s History Month.  The women of Oppenheimer, Blend, Harrison and Tate, Inc., created this program five years ago to celebrate women in our community who exhibit the passion and perseverance to succeed.  Together with Frost, Regnier Valdez, and the San Antonio Business Journal, we continue the program and its mission.

The National Women’s History project celebrated a milestone with its 30th anniversary and this year’s national theme Writing Women Back Into History.  In keeping with this theme, 14 outstanding women, 10 deceased and 4 living, were remembered and honored by the more than 170 women who attended the Beyond the Glass Ceiling event in San Antonio.  These women have shaped our city and state’s civil rights, education and culture and remain an inspiration to us all. Our living honorees included Lila Cockrell, Joci Straus, Sheryl Sculley, and Esperanza “Hope” Andrade.

Women honored from our past:

Artemisia Bowden (1879-1969), School administrator and civic leader

Katherine Stinson (1801-1977), and Marjorie Stinson (1806-1975), Aviators

Emma Tenayuca (1916-1999), Social justice and labor activist

Marion Koogler McNay (1883-1950), Art patron

Clara Driscoll (1881-1945), Savior of the Alamo

Mary Nan West (1925-2001), South Texas Rancher and Stock Show & Rodeo Leader

The Chili Queens of San Antonio (Early 1800s – 1937), Street chefs and chili inventors

Mary Maverick Green (1874-1962), and Emily Edwards (1888-1980), Founders of the San Antonio Conservation Society

Our event featured guest speaker, Dr. Coleen Grissom, a professor at Trinity University and a heroine in her own right with a passion for sharing her appreciation of quality literature and mentoring female students to reach their goals.
